Dirk Powell and The
Flatville Aces
Dirk Powell combines deep-running roots in rural American
tradition with an overarching artistic vision that speaks
poignantly to the audiences of today.
From learning banjo and fiddle at the feet of his grandfather
in Kentucky, through founding the Louisiana Cajun super group
Balfa Toujours, to extensive recording and film work with
such artists as Jack White, Joan Baez, T-Bone Burnett, Anthony
Minghella, Loretta Lynn, and Spike Lee, Dirk has arrived at
a place all his own - one where tradition, inspiration, and
innovation meet without borders. Tonight Dirk plays Cajun
accordion, fiddle, and sings with the Flatville Aces.
The Flatville Aces. Featuring master fiddle player Jock Tyldesley
and Gavin Lewery, this 4-piece band has one of the most authentic
Cajun sounds outside of Louisiana. They have played all over
the UK and Europe to great acclaim. So much like the real
thing that they sound like they were all born on the bayou.
Cajun pure and simple - an awesome, powerful, traditional
dance machine.

The Creole Kings are
five talented musicians who have played in this genre at major
festivals all over Europe. Between them they have over 100
years’ experience in Louisiana music in bands like RCajun,
Flatville Aces, Bearcats, Cajun Roosters, and Zydecomotion.
After their successful first gig at our very own Cajun Barn
Chris Hall's Creole Kings have taken their joyous Louisiana
sounds to Festivals around Europe including the Bristol Cajun
and Zydeco Festival in October 2011.
The band plays Louisiana Creole music.....maybe best described
as a music that holds the mid ground between Cajun and Zydeco.
It has the melodies of Cajun and the underlying Creole rhythms
that characterised early Zydeco music. It uses the scrubboard
for syncopated rhythm alongside a funky guitar, bass, and
drums overlaid with trance like accordion riffs. Its gentle
yet insistent beat is extremely danceable.
The band takes their inspiration from Creole musicians like
Bois Sec Ardoin and Preston Frank along with more modern exponents
like Cedric Watson and Joe Hall. This Creole sound is merged
with early Zydeco from bands like Boozoo Chavis, and John
Delafose from back in the days before Zydeco became the double
pumping hard driving machine it is today.

The
CAJUN ROOSTERS
are a multi-talented multi award winning truly International
band bringing together some of the finest and most experienced
Cajun and Zydeco musicians in Europe.
They have a reputation as one of the most authentic Cajun
and Zydeco bands around which has put them in the forefront
of the scene and earned them headline festival appearances
in Germany, France, Netherlands, UK, Denmark, Switzerland,
Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium and Italy.
They are equally at home playing blues festivals, jazz festivals,
folk roots festivals, and Cajun/Zydeco festivals as their
varied repertoire gives them an unmatched ability to appeal
to so many audiences.
This repertoire includes not just Cajun and Zydeco but also
Swamp Blues, Louisiana Rock ‘n Roll, Creole and New
Orleans beats. They have also carved out a reputation as
one of the most popular headline bands on the summer outdoor
stage circuit winning over big audiences in city squares
all over Europe many of whom have never heard Cajun or Zydeco
music before.
Saturday
22nd December: Christmas special!
The Bearcats were
formed in the summer of 1991 by a group of musicians who
between them had spent more time than anyone else in this
country immersing themselves in the music of Southwest Louisiana.
It came as no surprise that they rapidly established themselves
as one of the few bands outside Louisiana who can capture
the unmistakable but elusive sound of Cajun music.
"Y’all got a good rhythm" as Cajun musician
D L Menard said when they supported him on one of their
early gigs. They have played with many other Louisiana musicians
including Steve Riley, Eddie Le Jeune, John Delafose, Beau
Jocque and Tasso who all commented on their authentic sound
and their understanding of that elusive Cajun spirit.
