England, 1937. Studied at RAC 1959-1962. Focused art on use
of everyday objects.
Modelled work on Kitchen Sink School of Art. Painted ordinary
objects from different angles: Flagmap (1959). Employed band
of colours. From 1961 work reflected growing involvement with
political issues and loss of individualism in the consumer
society.
Focused on American images because of their universality.
Also used flag imagery as political comment, eg. Situation
in Cuba, Cuban Flag invaded by Stars & Stripes, and England's
Glory, where matchbox is eaten away by Stars & Stripes
.
Best known for Toothpaste Paintings (1962) emphasizing covert
methods used by advertising to influence unwary consumers.
