During
late 1950's helped launch an alternative to Abstract Expressionism
in USA. His appropriation of immediately recognizable imagery:
American flags, targets and numbers resulted in a more public,
apparently less introspective approach than was prevalent,
and his work was distinct for being premeditated, ironic and
detached.
During
1960's Johns turned to more private imagery - but his art
still held a central position in terms of its effect. The
impact of his work influenced the most important artistic
developments of the 60's and early 70's in the USA.
Since
mid 70's, Johns concentrated on history of art and what it
means to be an artist. Juxtaposing abstract patterns, hidden
references and familiar objects, he reached new levels of
complexity in canvases that rank among the most beautiful
created in our time. This work in 1980's was based on his
more expressive personal imagery.
