Peter Phillips

Born in 1939 in Birmingham. From 1953 -1955 he studied at Moseley Road Secondary School of Art, Birmingham and from 1955 to 1959 at the Birmingham College of Art. In 1959 he visited Paris and started to exhibit at the RBA Galleries, London. Studied at the Royal College of Art with R B Kitaj, Allen Jones, Derek Boshier, Patrick Caulfield and David Hockney. There he saw reproductions of work by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. He was particularly fascinated by American culture and reflected its commerical iconography and aggressive advertising style in his dynamic "montage" paintings.

From 1962 -1963 he taught at the Coventry and Birmingham Colleges of Art. From 1964-66 he lived in New York and travelled in the USA with Allen Jones. In 1965 he had his first one-man exhibition at the Kornblee Gallery, New York. He collaborated on a project called "Hybrid" with Gerald Laing in 1966. He travelled in Africa, the Far East and the USA. Retrospectives include the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1982. He now lives and works in Mallorca.
