Joe Tilson

Born in London, 1928. Worked as a carpenter from 1944-1946. Attended St Martin's School of Art and started at RAC 1952. Returned to teach at St Martin's from 1958 -1963.

Influence of American abstract painting of late 1950's led to taste for large scale, bold colour and simplicity of form.

In 1960 his first wood reliefs emerged. He integrated simple patterns, basic geometric shapes, introduced bright primary and secondary colours and stencilled lettering, eg, For Jake & Anna (1961), one of his earliest 'Pop' works. In the 1970's began to relate his own contemporary artefacts to other cultures and to the transcendental, spiritual and mystical themes.
